DDoS Attack Gray Industry Profits Revealed: CDN07's One-Stop Protection Solution
Currently, DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks are escalating globally. Due to their low threshold, minimal cost, and rapid effectiveness, these attacks have long become the preferred means of cyber sabotage for criminals. The accompanying "gray industry" has also thrived, reaping substantial profits.

DDoS attacks have now become mainstream, with many enterprise websites dragged into an "offline" quagmire without realizing it—particularly in industries like e-commerce and gaming. To understand why this method is so "popular," we must examine the profit chain behind it.

Every large-scale attack sends shockwaves through the industry:

  • March 2013: A 300Gbps traffic onslaught against Spamhaus and CloudFlare nearly collapsed European network systems.
  • February 2014: A peak traffic of 400Gbps affected 785,000 sites, including 4chan and WikiLeaks.

Industry insiders note that DDoS attacks are "brutal" because attackers only need to pre-control a batch of servers or endpoints, implant traffic attack programs, and instantly release massive requests to completely overwhelm target bandwidth.

Unlike traditional cyber intrusions requiring tedious steps like vulnerability analysis, penetration testing, and privilege escalation, DDoS uses direct "traffic stomping." For example, controlling 1,000 "zombie" devices (each with 10Mbps bandwidth) yields a combined 10Gbps attack bandwidth. When launched simultaneously, this instantly depletes ordinary sites' bandwidth and disrupts access.

Most domestic enterprises have bandwidth configurations of 10Mbps or 100Mbps; only leading internet companies deploy 1Gbps or higher. Fewer than 20 IDCs and professional security vendors nationwide can handle traffic exceeding 100Gbps. Once hit by  (extremely large traffic), self-defense is nearly impossible.

Who is launching the attacks?
Hacked servers and endpoints are commonly called "zombie devices" in the industry. Data from a security monitoring platform shows 79.7% of attack traffic originates from servers, with the rest from personal computers, routers, etc. Servers are vulnerable due to their multiple external interfaces,  (24/7 operation) of Web services, and frequent vulnerabilities. Personal computers, by contrast, have smaller attack surfaces and are harder to control.

The owners of these "zombie devices," known as "black industry practitioners," operate independently or are hired by third parties to attack high-yield target industries. Sectors like gaming, gambling, and fintech are persistent DDoS hotspots. Online pricing is even explicit—"1Gbps for 1 hour, only $7 USD"—with some website owners hiring hackers at great cost to defeat competitors.

Clearly, DDoS is a "low-investment, high-return" shortcut for attackers but often a devastating blow to victimized enterprises.
Prevention and Response
To resist (ward off) DDoS, enterprises must:
  1. Implement cybersecurity grading protection systems, prioritizing security construction alongside business operations.
  2. Strategically deploy defense measures—blindly scaling bandwidth or temporarily shutting down services only plays into attackers' hands.
Counterattack as threats emerge. Deploying professional DDoS protection in advance stifles risks at their source.

CDN07 Security’s DDoS Protection offers end-to-end defense, from front-end detection to back-end traffic cleaning, providing reliable solutions for enterprises:

  • Massive Traffic Interception: Easily handles sudden traffic surges.
  • Rapid Activation: Switches to protection mode in minimal time during attacks.
  • Uninterrupted Operations: Effectively filters malicious packets while ensuring normal access.
